The point is, though, that we can keep true to our values while still expressing appreciation. For most of us, the spirit of togetherness has more to do with being with the people we care about than what we give/receive or what we consume.

While we readily agree on the adage of ?it?s better to give than receive,? we can take this to the next level by giving more upon receiving. We can all give more to those who gift us by offering in returning an enthusiastic and heart-felt ?thanks? ? remembering to thank for the intention, the generosity and caring in the giving, more so than the actual item itself.

The literal meaning of this oft confused word has to do with moving toward God. Or, if other words work better for you, moving toward nature or the divine. It can be easy to see in yoga classes that many become swept up in the commercialism and consumerism. Simply by taking a moment on a regular basis to step back and ask the question of how the yoga experience and the rituals we create can move us closer to our pure nature, we immediately find a bigger perspective and breathe into simple answers.

Meet your merchant: Wild Mountain Yoga - The Union of Grass Valley

Amanda Dozal and Mandy Lucchese didn't choose yoga. It was more like yoga chose them.

“It calls you in,” Lucchese said. “It's like having an ‘aha' moment and realizing there's a whole world within the body.”

Dozal, 32, and Lucchese, 36, have co-owned Wild Mountain Yoga Center since 2008. The two-room studio, tucked in Nevada City's Seven Hills Business District, will celebrate its 15th birthday from 2 to 7 p.m. this Friday.

Free classes, live music and a birthday toast are on the party schedule.

Wild Mountain was established a decade and a half ago, around the time when yoga was experiencing a revival after its heyday in the counterculture of the 1960s.

“It's becoming more mainstream,” Dozal said. “You don't have to be a yogi to do yoga. You can be an artist, a rock star ... a construction worker.”

With 55 yoga classes a week, taught by 21 teachers and spanning about 15 different varieties of yoga, there's a stretching-breathing-meditating routine for just about anyone's schedule. Classes are about $10 for an hour, and first-timers are encouraged to “just show up” at a class that interests them.


Lucchese grew up in Colorado. Her resume includes a stint as an art teacher and a caretaker.

Dozal is originally from Lake Tahoe, then owned her own yoga studio in Wisconsin before “divine timing brought me back” to California, where she started taking classes at Wild Mountain.

“I thought it was absolutely crazy, financially, to start a business in California,” Dozal said.

But when the studio's owner asked Dozal if she'd like to take over at the already well-established Wild Mountain — and Lucchese agreed to go from yoga teacher to co-owner — the deal was sealed.

They call Wild Mountain “the community's yoga studio,” and they bring their spunk to the whole operation.

“We're kind of goofballs as it is,” Dozal said. “We keep it real and approachable, accessible and non-pretentious.”

They're opening up the studio Friday to celebrate a milestone, but also to invite new people to take a break from busyness and experience the benefits of yoga.

“It helps you to deal with daily life when everything's chaotic,” Dozal said.

It could also keep the doctor away.

“It benefits you physically, emotionally and spiritually,” Lucchese added. “It's the cheapest form of healthcare.”

Comfort Zone 1: Think light.
Sports outfits are normally designed light weight. This is to allow the wearer to move more flexibly and to let the material of the outfit absorb the perspiration more quickly. The best type of fabric that conducts that kind of action is light organic cotton and linen.

Comfort Zone 2: Choose loose but not too wobbly.
Yoga features movements in all different directions and makes the body stretch all the way. It is then wise to choose a product that is not too tight and that restricts you in any way. Getting upset for being throttled by your own clothes is not the main point why yoga was invented. But do not pick the ones that are too loose either since they can get in the way when you are performing the sport. However, when doing Bikram Yoga, for example, where upside-down poses are often conducted, make sure your top fits to your body frame or it could cause unnecessary embarrassment for you in your yoga class.

Comfort Zone 3: Breathe yoga with breathable top.
One sweats a lot when doing yoga even when they think they do not move that much. Like in other types of sport, perspiration needs to be dried quickly. For women, the moisture-wicking fabric alone is not enough as the padding in their bras or sports bras normally tend to give the wearers a sponge effect (sweat collecting in the bra cup). Therefore, it is crucial to check and ensure that the sports bra you are wearing has perforations on the pads. These perforated pads will allow the sweat to dry out more quickly and thus comfort could be guaranteed.

Comfort Zone 4: Style up.
The definition of comfort includes how comfortable we are with the outfit we wear. Choose a form of clothing that shows your identity. Define the color or style that suits best for you. Whether it is a compression style, halter top, or bra with molded cup, if you like it, buy it. If you don?t, simply drop it.
Hopefully these tips can be a good start in getting the content feeling we are all seeking when practicing yoga.

Grateful Yoga helps some Northwestern students relieve stress - Daily Northwestern

When Prachi Murarka came to Northwestern, she wanted to become a senator. Now the SESP senior is training to become a yoga teacher in hopes of helping people become more conscious and caring.

Nick and Lela Beem, the owners of Grateful Yoga, 1108 Davis St., helped bring about that shift, Murarka said.

"I was inspired by how two people can live a life of yoga, make that their entire life, and really help people in the process," Murarka said. "Seeing the fact that they can make it and feeling their encouragement throughout the entire process was definitely one of the major factors that got me here and even to consider this as an option."

The Beems, a husband-and-wife team, opened Grateful Yoga in June after teaching at the Heartwood Center, 1818 Dempster Ave., for five years. Grateful Yoga's teaching philosophy includes the idea that yoga is more than a workout, they said.

For them, yoga's tradition of meditation, philosophy and postures can bring people to a more balanced life, as it did for them in college.

While writing her senior thesis, Lela Beem said she smoked and drank to ease the stress. Yoga gave her the resolve she needed to change her habits, she said.

"I remember a moment in yoga," Beem said, closing her eyes and inhaling deeply. "I really like to breathe deep, the feeling of breathing. My body so much more wants to breathe than it wants cigarettes, so it was just over for me."

Yoga not only changed Lela Beem's habits but also brought her closer to her future husband, she said.

"That was, from the start, one of the things that attracted us to each other, and our relationship grew as we both grew as yoga practitioners," Nick Beem said. "It's all woven together pretty intimately."

He said ideas from yoga and meditation made them understand how they are responsible for their own actions and cannot blame their partners, which helped their relationship.

Classes at Grateful Yoga focus on these ideas, allowing students to learn the history and philosophy of yoga in addition to the postures, said Richard Joseph, an NU professor who takes classes at Grateful Yoga.

"There's a lot of yoga that's done as a form of exercise," Joseph said. "Their teaching is as far removed from that as it can possibly be."

The studio consists of one large room with a hardwood floor, spotless white walls and green curtains. The space facilitates the practice of yoga and meditation, Communication senior Kelsey Melvin said.

"The decor itself puts you in the right state of mind," said Melvin, who also takes classes at the studio. "As soon as you step into that place, you know that it's a safe place, a place where you can practice yoga on your own terms. It's a stress relief."

For Murarka, the classes not only reduced stress but also helped her look more deeply into her everyday life and her future.

"A lot of times Northwestern students get bogged down by what we have to achieve and don't really take the time to nurture and deal with who we are," Murarka said. "We'll work on the deeper level and can really make more of an impact in whatever we're doing, whether in business, medicine, engineering, journalism … all the things Northwestern has to offer."
