Explore the history of yoga: the beginning

In a series of articles I will be exploring yoga. I will start
in this article with its history, and later articles will
explore other various aspects of Yoga including positions.

If you greet each day with sun salutations instead of a latté
and can perform the astanga second series with your eyes closed
then it may be time to explore the history of yoga, particularly
its origins.

Hatha yoga--the performance of physical postures and breathing
exercises--is just one small part of the eightfold or eight limb
path of yoga. For more than 2,000 years, students have gained
insight into a wealth of knowledge arising from ancient Vedic
scriptures. And, you can do. Thanks to the Yoga Sutras of
Patanjali.

Written two millennia ago, The Yoga Sutras gives us insight into
the rich history of yoga. It also teaches us how to achieve
enlightenment by tapping into this complex system of knowledge,
beliefs and practices.

What is yoga?

The history of yoga has been passed down to us through hundreds
of different schools of thought. All share a common origin in
the Vedas and all have certain characteristics in common.

Yoga for Fun and Profit

Stress levels around the world are on the rise. In order to deal
with this, relaxation and stress reduction therapies have sprung
up from everywhere. Yoga instruction is no longer just a fringe
population idea. It is now a mainstream fitness methodology.
Yoga certifications are now available from many places in North
America. As a result of this, yoga instructors are now available
everywhere.

Each gym now offers yoga classes from certified yoga
instructors. It's time we understood what this is all about and
where we are going with respect to the fitness industry. The
word yoga is a Sanskrit word meaning joining or union. What are
we joining? The human being consists of several entities
commonly referred to as body-mind-spirit. An integrated human
being is the goal of yoga. We are joining the different pieces
of the human being to make an integrated, holistic being that is
attuned to one goal.

The body, mind and spirit are all integrated with a common attitude and viewpoint. This is different from the state of being where the body wants to
satisfy one need and the mind another and the spirit yet a
third. This is the state during which mental storms occur and
the body responds in turn with a manifestation of that mental
vortex.

What Is Yoga

The Sanskrit word 'Yoga' has two meaning, because it is derived
from two roots - one is 'yujir yoge' and other is 'yuj
samadhou'. A good, regular yoga practice will go far in
relieving the stress and tension that sometimes cause mild back
pain, and in fact, studies have shown that yoga is the number
one most effective exercise for relieving back pain. There are
many types of yoga, some with more emphasis on the physical part
of the practice and some with a more spiritual approach,
some that will make you sweat and some where you'd spend half a
class holding the same posture.

Back to Chair Yoga: It goes by a variety of different names and
is sometimes mixed with other forms of exercise, within the same
class, such as: weight resistance, low-impact aerobics, Chair
Pilates, and Tai Chi. So, the one reason to try a Yoga class is
because you have found a low-impact exercise solution. Are you
tired all the time and feel the need to rest, but you know you
should get some exercise? How can you do both? The answer is to
start regularly attending Restorative Yoga classes, and reap the
rewards of healing without a tremendous amount of effort.

they can improve the quality of their life with the power of
yoga. Yoga combines both physical and mental activities, so it
engages your whole body rather than just part of it. Some of the
benefits of yoga include better breathing, easier relaxation and
relief from the symptoms of asthma.

The reason that yoga can help with your asthma is that by using
yoga, you will get your body back to a more natural state. Both
your body and your mind will be less stressed.

granted, you will notice that your breathing automatically
becomes calmer. Rather than it's "normal", hyper-active state.
