Yoga Decreases Stress in Childhood Cancer Patients and Parents - MyHealthNewsDaily

Yoga may help childhood cancer patients and their parents cope with the stress of a cancer diagnosis and treatment, according to a new study.

Yoga was beneficial for older children, ages 13 to 18, but not younger ones, ages 7 to 12.

Adolescents and their parents experienced a decrease in anxiety and increase in sense of well-being following the yoga sessions, the researchers say.

"Yoga is emerging as an effective complementary therapy in adult oncology," the researchers wrote in the September/October issue of the Journal of Pediatric Oncology Nursing, "promising benefits for decreasing symptom distress including fatigue, insomnia, mood, and stress resulting in improved quality of life."

The study focused on childhood cancer patients and their families. Parents may experience stress and anxiety because of the uncertainty of the disease, and the suffering of their children.

"Teens reported that that they felt relaxed and calmer, and that [yoga] was fun," the researchers said in a statement. Parents said the yoga sessions were relaxing, allowed them to stretch their muscles and strengthen their bodies, and relieved stress. They felt better about themselves, and those who participated in the sessions with their children said it helped them bond with their children.

Yoga lowers heart rate and blood pressure, and improves circulation and oxygenation. It also improves muscle tone, lung function, coordination and flexibility, according to the researchers.

Previous research has suggested yoga's focus on deep breathing and breathing control may turn down the body's "fight or flight" response, or the body's reaction to stress.

More studies are needed to determine whether yoga also has an effect on fatigue, sleep disturbance, pain and nausea, the researchers said.

The study was conducted by researchers at the Children’s Hospitals and Clinics of Minnesota.

Should Christians practice yoga? - CNN (blog)

Editor's Note: Dr. R. Albert Mohler, Jr. the president of Southern Baptist Theological Seminary recently asked on his blog, should Christians should practice yoga? That post got picked up by the Associated Press and led to a lot of discussion on the topic.  In this story from CNN Affiliate KLTV in Tyler Texas, a yoga instructors and student, who happened to be practicing Christians, voice their disagreement with Mohler.

Does practicing yoga compromise your Christian faith? That question is at the center of a debate made by the Southern Baptist Seminary president. Christians that practice yoga say two have little to do with each other.

Tanya Wood is a yoga instructor at the Yoga Spot in Tyler. She has been practicing yoga for eight years. "It makes you feel good, strong and flexible," said Wood. "It really does allow you to just wind down."

But, recent comments made by Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler has Wood wound up. "It's clear it's struck a nerve," said Mohler. "I hope at least it's a fruitful conversation."

In his online blog, Mohler said, "Christians who participate in yoga are embracing, or at minimum flirting with a spiritual practice that threatens to transform their own spiritual lives."

"I totally disagree," said Wood. "I'm a Christian. I was saved when I was five-years-old. I have never practiced anything that would compromise my beliefs."

Mohler said that people should see yoga represents and see that it conflicts with Christianity. "This is totally separate," said Wood. "It has nothing to do with religion. What we practice has nothing to do with religion."

YOGA Treatment in High Blood Pressure (Hypertension) Posted By : Bendz (M.S.Benz)

For controlling your hypertension, there are two effective yoga exercises that helps lower the blood pressure:Before doing this, please consult with an yoga guru and your physician.

Inverted Yoga

Inverted yoga reverses the action of gravity on the body. The most profound changes brought about by Inverted Yoga is in circulation. In inverted poses, legs and abdomen are placed higher than the heart.

Lengthening up through the legs and keep them very active so your spine opens and the entire body actively involved in the pose.

One of the reasons for this is simply because the force of gravity is reversed and venous return becomes significantly greater.

Normally, the muscles of the calf and other skeletal muscles in the lower extremities must contract in order to pump unoxygenated blood and waste back to the heart through the veins.

In inverted poses, gravity causes the blood to flow easily back through the veins and this brings the blood pressure in the feet to a minimum. This in effect gives skeletal muscles a chance to rest.

In Inverted poses, drainage of blood and waste from the lower body back to the heart is increased and disorders such as varicose veins and swollen ankles are relieved.

Rhythmic Breathing

It's time to learn about breathing, because inhaling and exhaling has the power to nourish the body and calm the mind.

Not just any old breathing will do. If you're like most people, you take shallow breaths, pull in your stomach when you inhale and never empty your lungs of carbon dioxide when you exhale.

Here's the physiological explanation: Long, slow breaths are more efficient than short, fast ones.

To take in a good breath, your lungs must first be basically empty. Thus the key to efficient breathing lies in exhaling completely. A full exhalation begins with the upper chest, proceeds to the middle chest and finishes with tightening the abdominal muscles.

Only after a good exhalation can you draw in a good lungful of the oxygen-rich air your blood needs for nourishing cells.

How to Find the Right Divorce Lawyer in Philadelphia Posted By : Joseph Carter

Several couples in Philadelphia who want to file for a divorce often feel ambivalent with regard to the steps in proceeding with the legal process. Because a divorce is a complex legal matter, going through a divorce case can be perplexing. However, with a reputable Philadelphia divorce lawyer by your side, you can be ensured that you will be guided accordingly in every step of the way. Also, you can be rest assured that your rights will be safeguarded and the anxiety associated with this taxing legal action will be minimized.

Finding the right divorce lawyer is often the most difficult step in settling divorce details. Asking friends or relatives for recommendations within Philadelphia before starting your search can be a significant step that may save you time eventually.

Browsing online listings and phone book entries referring Philadelphia divorce lawyers is a helpful method because it presents a wide range of qualified lawyers to choose from. Also, getting in touch with local and state legal bar associations that provide personal assistance is always a good option.

Often, divorce lawyers offer initial consultations for free. Thus, this is a good opportune time to meet with your potential lawyers and establish a relationship of trust and openness in the early stage of the divorce process. Keep in mind that it is necessary that you feel comfortable in sharing private information with your lawyer. When you have the opportunity to address your issues with a divorce lawyer personally, you will likely find your divorce case to be much easier to deal with.

You should know how frequently you can keep in touch with your attorney and how to reach him in emergency situations as well as if your divorce lawyer returns calls without delay. In addition, keep in mind that you should ask the divorce attorney regarding the cases that he or she managed before that is comparable to your case. It is also necessary that you determine the price range that you can allot for a divorce attorney and then inquire about the rates and modes of payment offered by your prospective lawyer.

Furthermore, you may be able to decide if the lawyer is fitting for your own case by getting acquainted with previous clients who have worked with a certain divorce lawyer in Philadelphia. If you truly want to ascertain the abilities of the attorney or if you want to further learn about his or her experience and the legal strategies used, you must consider asking your divorce lawyer for the names of former clients, if feasible.

Most people want to know the specific responsibilities of the divorce lawyer in the case as well as the comprehensive steps of the divorce process. Divorce lawyers in Philadelphia can provide you imperative details about this critical life-changing episode and are frequently willing to be of service to your requests and respond to your inquiries willingly.

A divorce case does not need to be a cause of further conflict but a way of resolving conflicts. You will be able to deal with your case with diligence and confidence with a skillful Philadelphia divorce attorney on your side.

Balance Ball Fitness - Upper Body Workout [VHS]

Balance Ball Fitness - Upper Body Workout [VHS]Yoga and Pilates instructor Suzanne Deason combines moves inspired by both disciplines and adds the extra balance challenges of a stability ball in this 40-minute video. The exercises target the chest, arms, shoulders, back, and abdominals, with special attention to the core postural muscles. (Whenever you're balancing on the ball, you're working your abdominals and back together with the other muscles you're targeting.)

You'll need a BalanceBall or other stability ball for this workout. Deason shows you first how to use and feel comfortable with it, then she progresses through a selection of exercises: ball squeezes with the forearms for the chest, upper-body lifts from a draped-over position for the back, pushups (legs are on the ball, hands on the floor, midbody in the air, abs tightly contracted), and more. You'll feel long, lean, and strong after this workout.

Deason is a soft-voiced, patient instructor, explaining clearly and demonstrating beautifully. The scene is a wood deck overlooking a woods and stream. Quiet music plays in the background. --Joan Price

Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies [VHS]

Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies [VHS]A workout that balances both the body and the mind can be found in the Basic Yoga Workout for Dummies. Fundamental postures are explained and demonstrated slowly with an emphasis on breathing and motion. Sara Ivanhoe teaches 12 basic poses that are termed the "daily dozen" and offers challenges and modifications to each of these moves. Ivanhoe presents these concepts in an approachable and calming manner that adds to the overall relaxed feeling that this session exudes. Newcomers to the practice of yoga will learn jargon, essential postures, and focusing techniques. Experienced participants may find some information redundant, but Ivanhoe offers such thorough explanations about each posture that you can't help but expand your existing knowledge of yoga. As the mountain pose, standing forward bend, and downward facing dog are explained (not to mention the nine other poses within the "daily dozen"), proper body alignment becomes the focus. Meticulous attention is given to the connection between breathing and body movement with several reminders to keep the spine in "neutral alignment." This session ranks great for safety and content and makes yoga accessible to anyone who "always wanted to, but never did." This is a substantial program that can introduce the basics and build your understanding of yoga. --Olivia Voigts

Earth Yoga hosts grand opening in Felton today - San Jose Mercury News

FELTON - At 26, Amanda Hamilton has turned her dream of opening a yoga studio into reality.

She will host grand opening for Earth Yoga, at 6245A Highway 9, from 5-7 p.m. today.

She is borrowing the business model of a studio in Santa Monica where she took classes, asking people to donate $10 to $15 per class but opening her doors to anyone regardless of what they give.

"I feel strongly that this is what the universe is calling me to do," she said. "The need for a safe space to gather and re-center is greater now especially due to the hard economic times that we are in."

Hamilton's dream has brought her full circle back to Santa Cruz County.

Originally from North Monterey County, she attended UC Santa Cruz for two years before transferring to the University of Illinois at Chicago. After graduating with a degree in history, she moved back to California.

She found yoga and took her first teacher training in the Vinyasa Flow style in Monterey. Next she moved to the Los Angeles area where she taught yoga.

In Santa Monica, she discovered kirtan, the chanting practice that led her to participate in a teacher training at Bhakti Yoga Shala, a donation-based yoga studio led by a husband and wife, Govindas and Radha.

That training, she said, taught her to trust herself.

When she visited a friend in the Santa Cruz Mountains, she discovered the empty shop in downtown Felton next to Chopstix restaurant.

It's small,

with room for at most a dozen yoga mats, but with "the beautiful redwood tree and the totem of a bear" outside, she felt it was the right place.

"The space found me," she said. "I called my teacher and asked 'Am I ready?' He asked, 'Do you think you are ready?'"

Her answer was yes.

After crunching the numbers, she signed a two-year lease and called on friends and family members to help make over what used to be Scoob's DVD. They redid the floor, removed lots of staples and painted the walls cream.

"It's nice and intimate," said Hamilton, who dressed up the ceiling with colorful fabric. "Some people are intimidated by larger places."

There are five instructors, some "well-seasoned" and others "fresh out of training," she said.

"I loved what she was doing this with the donation-based thing," said Roxy, an instructor who trained with Mark Stephens last year and saw Hamilton's ad on Craigslist.

Down the street is a long-established yoga practice, the Center for Healing, which offers classes at drop-in fees of $12 to $14, with discounts for students and senior citizens.

"We welcome any new business in town," said Claire Campbell, who owns Outback Trading Company on Highway 9 and practices yoga at home when she's not exercising her horse. "I wish her a lot of luck."

IF YOU GO

Grand opening of Earth Yoga

Yoga class honors Peace Day - Wilkes Barre Times-Leader

greater pittston ymca

Posted: October 10
Updated: Today at 1:00 AM

On September 21, yoga participants at the Greater Pittston YMCA held a special class in honor of World Peace Day.

In accordance with the event, Colleen Walsh and Rita Skechus, yoga instructors at the Greater Pittston YMCA, held a string of classes that were dedicated to the special day.

World Peace Day is an annual day of global ceasefire and non-violence. Across the globe to honor the event, trees were planted, candlelight vigils and prayer ceremonies were held, and even festivals were organized.

The Greater Pittston YMCA yoga class began their World Peace Day celebration on Saturday, September 19. The class performed 27 sun salutations.

“The sun salutation warms up the body and prepares it for the poses to come,” said Walsh. “108 sun salutations are performed globally amongst the yoga community to honor World Peace Day. We only performed 27, which is a quarter of what is done globally.”

Their homage to the event continued throughout the week through September 21, the actual World Peace Day. Twenty-seven sun salutations were once again performed.

“I wanted to make sure everyone that comes to yoga was able to participant in the event. Some people come Saturdays that don’t come during the week or vice versa. Everyone that comes to yoga should get to celebrate,” explained Walsh.

Special intentions for peace were set during each class, and drums and chanting were used to enhance the atmosphere. The main focus of each class was to live happily; that happiness is inherent in everybody and everything.

Yoga classes are offered at The Y, Monday-Wednesday from 7-8 p.m. and Saturday from 10:30-11:30 a.m. Contact Kelly McCabe at 655-2255 for more info.

Downward Face Dog, Yoga For Beginners Posted By : Athil Singh

Yoga for beginners. There are many different yoga poses that are extremely effective. Today, I'd like to give you a few examples of some of them. I would like to devote this article to 'Standing Yoga Poses for Beginners'. Enjoy!!

The first pose is called: Adho Mukha Svanasana (AH-doh MOO-kah shvah-NAHS-anna)
In English this pose is called 'Downward Face Dog'.
Adho - downward, mukha = face, svana = dog.

Let's start with the step by step guidelines to master this particular pose.

1. This pose starts out on your hands and knees. Make sure your hands are positioned underneath the shoulders, spread your fingers wide and have your knees under your hips. Typically, you'll have your knees about 7 inches apart. Have your spine straightened and relaxed.

2. While you exhale, push your hips toward the ceiling. You will basically form a V-shape with your body arching in the back. At this point your arms and legs should be straight with your buttocks in the air. The shoulders should be relaxed. Move your heels toward the floor while your hands and feet remain hip-width apart.

Tip: At this point, if your hamstrings feel tight and hurt, you may bent the knees so your spine will be able to stretch fully.

3. Reduce the stress on the wrists by pressing down with the fingers and palms of your hands. Push your hips backwards. Your head should drop slightly and your heart should move toward your back.

4. Move your hips up and back. Make sure you keep the focus on your breathing while you're holding this pose. Deep, steady in- and exhalation techniques create a flow of energy. To finish this exercise, make sure you exhale and end on your hands and knees, the same way you've started the pose.

This posture will give you a flow of energy throughout the entire body. It's also extremely beneficial to stretch the shoulders, legs, spine and really your entire body as well. You will notice the buildup of strength in your body by practicing this pose.

Most strength benefits will be noticed in the arms, legs and feet. The yoga for beginners 'Downward Face Dog' pose will relieve you from feeling tired and rejuvenates your entire body. Benefit from a boost in your immune system, digestion, blood flow and even sinus problems. In addition, you'll notice a lift in your spirit and calming mindset.

Yoga Journal's Yoga for Beginners with Patricia Walden [VHS]

Yoga Journal's Yoga for Beginners with Patricia Walden [VHS]Yoga Journal's excellent series of videos offers a thorough beginner's guide to yoga stretching and breathing practices. Patricia Walden's soothing voice and gentle approach to teaching eases the viewer through several stretching techniques, never rushing and often repeating exercises "so that the body can learn." Walden's slow approach is also "permission giving"; she talks the beginner through each stretch, suggesting ways to breathe and enhance even the most seemingly static pose, yet never pushing the viewer beyond his or her comfort level. Who would have thought the classic standing mountain pose could wear a person out? The tape is a good hour long, and may leave the viewer feeling refreshed and more aware of his or her body. One can't help but be a little inspired by Walden's fantastic, and realistic, body. She is easy on the eyes, yet not intimidatingly so. The production value on this video is excellent and consistent; the music is pleasant, even, and subtle. The exercises synthesize into one hour-long routine ending with a relaxation pose, so breaking it down into shorter segments is not as easy as with other Yoga Journal tapes. All in all an excellent and accessible beginner's guide to yoga. --Gilia Angell

Balance Ball Fitness - Lower Body Workout [VHS]

Balance Ball Fitness - Lower Body Workout [VHS]This should be called the Abs, Back, and Lower Body Workout, because the core abdominal and back muscles get a more vigorous workout than the hips, thighs, and buttocks that this video aims to target. Instructor Suzanne Deason--a yoga and Pilates instructor--blends moves inspired by both disciplines with the added abdominal challenge of balancing on the stability ball in this 40-minute video.

If this is your first time using a BalanceBall or other stability ball, pay attention as Deason gets you familiar with the ball first. She then shows you different ways to position yourself on the ball while working your buttocks, hips, and thighs. This isn't the best workout available for those muscles specifically, but if you want a routine that also works the abs and strengthens the back, you'll appreciate it.

Deason is a soft-voiced, patient instructor, explaining clearly and demonstrating beautifully. The scene is a wood deck overlooking a woods and stream. Quiet music plays in the background. --Joan Price

Is yoga a threat to Christianity? - WFAA

DALLAS — Is yoga a threat to Christianity?

It's a question being raised by Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler.  He says Christians who practice the ancient art are bending on their beliefs.

Mohler was in Dallas for an event Thursday night. he told News 8 the controversy started with an essay he wrote last month that appeared in an online blog.

He said yoga's stretching and meditative discipline is not a Christian pathway to God. Mohler said people should deny what yoga represents and see that it conflicts with Christianity.

He says he was writing about yoga's roots in Hinduism. Mohler was flooded with e-mails, but walked away learning a few things.

"I'm not against exercise," he said with a laugh. "I learned from a whole lot of Christians who think they're practicing yoga, but what they described to me is not what yoga has historically been.

Proponents of the practice say people come to yoga because they are often in pain, while others think it's a nice workout.

Other religious leaders have had the same debate. Muslim clerics have banned yoga in Egypt, Malaysia and Indonesia.

"It's clear that this struck a nerve," Mohler said. "I hope at least it's a fruitful converstation."

Yoga for every body: Exploring yoga through classes - Arizona Daily Star

Now that you've decided to explore the benefits of yoga, how do you know what kind of yoga to do?

The first question is, should you join a class or take yoga privately? There are good reasons for each. We'll look at that in two parts. Today's column is about joining a yoga class.

In ancient times, yoga classes were for children usually between 8 and 18. Adults always studied privately. However, we don't live in ancient times and we're not all between 8 and 18, so why go to a class?

A yoga class is a good way to "dip your toes in the water" before you jump in. It's also a good way to find a community of people who share some of your goals.

Another good reason to take a class, or several, is that it gives you an opportunity to try out some of the many styles of yoga. That way you can determine what feels right for you.

Yoga should leave you feeling balanced, alert and calm all at the same time. It is an internal exploration that will leave you with a sense of self-empowerment and well-being.

Yoga should never exhaust you, although it may call upon you to work in a strong way.

According to Patanjali's Yoga Sutra 2.46, asanas (postures) are steady and comfortable.

Another criterion is the teacher. Yoga is an experiential practice, so teachers should have regular personal practices of their own.

Of course you want someone well-qualified and knowledgeable. Often instructors will be registered with the Yoga Alliance, but not always.

When I began teaching, there was no registry and students had to be discerning. Whether a teacher is registered or not, you still must be discerning.

A good teacher guides you with an open heart and has a clear understanding of the science of yoga and an ability to modify and adapt postures appropriately to enhance your practice while keeping you injury-free.

A good instructor will lead you toward a more peaceful and fuller sense of yourself while gently challenging your abilities.

Once you've found a class and teacher that fit, you're ready to embrace your yoga journey … enjoy the ride!

Center for Yoga opens 4th location near U-M campus in Ann Arbor Topics: Business Review, Downtown Ann Arbor, News Comment NowShare this articlePrintEmailSharePosted: Oct 8, 2010 at 5:59 AM [Today]

Residents looking for new ways to get in exercise around the University of Michigan campus can now add ‘Hot Vinyasa Yoga’ to the list, thanks to a U-M alum.

Jonny Kest, a 1989 U-M graduate, officially opened his fourth Center for Yoga studio on 621 E. William St., located between Jimmy Johns and Pita Kabob Grill, on Sept. 13.

Kest, who studied yoga as a teenager in India with his father, said he has wanted to open a studio location in Ann Arbor ever since he opened his first studio in Metro Detroit in 1993.

“I wanted to bring this practice back to my alumni,” Kest said. “The students have a lot of stress because it’s very competitive there. It’s really amazing how yoga helps students get through stressful times of college.”

Even though Kest opened a Center for Yoga studio on 2450 W. Stadium Blvd. last November, he said that location was not ideal for the student population and started thinking about opening a second Ann Arbor studio, in addition to his other locations in Birmingham and West Bloomfield.

“A lot of the students were having trouble getting to that location and [the students] said the campus needed a studio where they could walk,” he said.

After finding the East William property, Kest said he signed a two-year lease in August and opened the studio a month later. He said he has plans for more renovations that will take place over Christmas break, and he thinks the Center for Yoga will get plenty of business by offering ‘Hot Vinyasa Yoga’ and making prices “really affordable.”

“I think eventually this studio is going to be packed and we’re going to have to move to a bigger space,” Kest said.

Brendan Cavender of Colliers International brokered the deal and said the new studio, which is about 1,300 square feet, was previously used for general offices.

Cavender said the property is a great utilization of the upper level space and shows how dowtown Ann Arbor tenants wanting to be close to campus have to “be creative and go to second floor spaces.”

With the third floor space of the building occupied by lululemon athletica—a yoga-inspired athletic apparel company—Center for Yoga employee Sharron Wodka said she thinks the studio is in the perfect downtown location.

“I can see how this would be a great place for students to be able to squeeze in a yoga class in the middle of the day,” she said. “I can’t think of a better thing to balance out your brain activity in your day.”

From yoga teacher to yoga therapist - West Milford Messenger

Antonette Redl was recently certified as a yoga therapist. She hosts various yoga therapy sessions at Andrea Powers Wellness Studio.
West Milford ? Antonette Redl, a West Milford High School graduate, recently completed her 500-hour yoga therapist certification with Yoga Flow.

She was first introduced to yoga while studying at Montclair State University, and graduated with a bachelor’s degree in commercial arts. After years of drifting in and out of yoga classes she discovered yoga not only opened her physically but opened her heart as well. This led her to deepen her own practice to become a teacher and now a yoga therapist.

What exactly is yoga therapy?

Yoga therapy hovers somewhere between a doctor’s visit and a stretching class, according to Redl. A session consists of therapeutic uses of yoga that work with specific conditions and needs. It is a practice for anyone in the process of healing from Fibromyalgia, depression, stress, cancer, menopause, back and hip injuries to name a few. Unlike a group yoga class it allows each individual to move at their own pace within their own space. A session can consist of yoga massage, restorative yoga, gentle yoga, Vini-style yoga, breath work, yoga nidra and guided meditation.

Many people start yoga because of an injury. But the average yoga teacher doesn’t have a background in advanced anatomy, or the time to address individual problems in a packed power yoga class. That’s where the yoga therapist comes in.

Physical therapy or yoga therapy

What’s the difference between yoga therapy and physical therapy? Physical therapy uses many methods, including targeted stretches, deep tissue massage, exercises and heat and/or ice therapy at home.

A yoga therapist works primarily with yoga moves and clients typically leave with instructions on a custom series of poses that may change each week according to the student’s progress and session.

Yoga therapy is complementary to physical therapy. And it teaches that the mind, body, and spirit are connected.

Redl will be offering a small four-week group hip therapy session beginning on Thursday, Oct. 14 at 10:45 a.m., a four-week yoga nidra beginning on Friday, Oct. 15 at noon, and a four-week restorative yoga class starting Friday, Oct. 15 at 5:30 p.m. For more information on one or all of these sessions go to http://www.andreapowers.com/ or call Andrea Powers Wellness Studio and Spa at 973-728-1486.

Now, infants turn to yoga! - Times of India

In the new movie "Eat, Pray, Love", actress Julia Roberts practices not only eating and love-making, but also yoga. With the help of celebrities such as Roberts, yoga has become an activity for the masses.

Now practiced by a broad range of people from nudists to babies, yoga has spread from its origin in India into western societies. Some would say the promotion of yoga in the US and Europe has become strident and commercial.

Yoga has spread so far that newborn babies now have an opportunity to get into a course just a short time after arriving in the world.

Some babies are already spirituality connected to yoga when they are born because their mothers attended yoga courses for pregnant women while they were still in the womb.

From yoga for infants still in diapers, the little ones can progress to yoga for babies, yoga for young children and then on to teenage yoga, adult yoga, yoga for women in menopause and yoga for seniors. Yoga is also offered in prisons and nudist camps.

The meditation, stretching and strengthening exercise that just a decade or so ago had an esoteric image, today is mainstream, accompanying many modern-thinking people throughout all phases of their lives. This is true even when in some yoga courses there isn't much left of the original Indian philosophy that promotes the wholeness of the body and soul.

The latest trend from the US and spreading to other countries is yoga for babies that are still nursing. In Germany baby yoga is still "taking baby steps", said Katja Kunipatz, who offers Pitimini yoga for infants at her studio in Berlin. People often don't understand what the course is supposed to achieve.

"It's not about the babies saying 'Ommmmm'," she said. "It's about building a relationship between parents and their child. It's good for both of them." Children get the benefit of movement and massages, while mothers have a chance to relax.

This is what five-month-old Dilay is supposed to experience, but she prefers fidgeting to relaxing. Her mother, Derya Kleinert, tries to make her stop by singing and stroking her, but her restlessness doesn't end. The participants who get to do the course with a silent doll are the happiest.

In adult yoga classes importance is placed on relaxation and serenity. Many participants aim to relieve stress, solve back problems or perhaps simply firm up their bottom by doing positions with names such as downward facing dog, cobra pose and sun salutation.

Health insurers accept yoga in some cases as preventative medicine. However, doctors generally don't think much of new types of yoga courses, such as those for babies. It has not been scientifically proven as having a positive effect on infants, said Stephan Esser, chief executive of Germany's association of paediatricians.

"But it can't hurt anything as long as the infants don't have to attempt the back-bending sun salutation pose."

"Yoga has shaken off its image as an esoteric activity and become a mass movement," said Doris Hafner, chief executive of Germany's professional association for yoga teachers. "The numbers are constantly increasing." One reason for the sustained growth of yoga is the constant development of new ideas. One example is holding yoga classes on the roof of high-rise buildings.

It is an indication of the deep yearning in our consumer society to attain wholeness," said Hafner.

But even this yearning for wholeness has been turned into a consumer product. Celebrities such as Madonna and Jennifer Aniston show off physiques hardened in yoga classes. Even Daniel Craig, who plays James Bond, supposedly does gentle yoga stretches. Clothing makers such as Adidas offer designer yoga mats by Stella McCartney. There also are breathable mats made of merino wool and Hello Kitty mats for children.

An Adidas spokeswoman said the company's yoga clothing and accessories collections are becoming more extensive because there is "constant demand" for the items. She declined, however, to provide revenue amounts.

It is generally difficult to describe the yoga industry in numbers. The German association of yoga instructors says there are more than 20,000 yoga teachers and 5 million yoga participants in Germany. A survey conducted by a major German market research company revealed that 8.5 per cent of German households have at least one person who does yoga.

The actual figure is believed to be higher because anyone who wishes may call himself or herself a yoga instructor in Germany. No certification is required. This is also true in the US and many other countries. Hafner said the reason there are a lot of "black sheep" in yoga is because it encompasses an "open concept".

Yoga vs. Pilates Posted By : Staff Writer Dex

Many people struggle to understand the differences between yoga and Pilates. That could simply be because the differences between the two practices are very subtle. Both yoga and Pilates offer similar physical benefits but take slightly different approaches to reach those improvements.

Comparing Yoga and Pilates:

1. Histories: The origin of yoga is somewhat unclear, but evidence shows that it may have been practiced as early as 3000 B.C. in areas that are now India and Pakistan. Yoga has been developed mainly through the religious practices of Hinduism and Buddhism. Pilates has a much shorter history, being developed by Joseph H. Pilates after he served as a nurse in World War I.

2. Philosophies: Both yoga and Pilates embrace the importance of the mind in controlling the body. There is a difference in that yoga seeks to achieve a balance between body, mind and spirit, coming from its religious roots. Pilates maintains a mind-body approach to improve physical fitness.

3. Poses: Many of the core poses of Pilates and yoga are the same or very similar. And the intent of the poses is the same in Pilates and yoga, which both use the poses to focus the body and mind -- and spirit in yoga -- so they are in union; this, in turn, allows a person to perform the movement or pose in the best possible way. The intent differs from many traditional exercise routines that focus on the completion of an exercise or movement and not on the performance of the movement.

4. Equipment: Yoga requires very little equipment. A yoga mat is the only essential piece of yoga equipment, with yoga blocks and belts being nice additions for beginners. Yoga balls are sometimes used, as well, to help develop better balance. Pilates equipment is much more frequently used. Although several Pilates exercises can be done with only a mat, Pilates machines allow for a much wider variation of poses and movements.
5. Benefits: The poses used in yoga and Pilates improve flexibility, strength and body control. Most practitioners also claim stress relief as a major benefit of both exercises.

YOGA Applications in Cancer Treatment Posted By : Bendz (M.S.Benz)

A cure for cancer exists through the use of yoga, a San Antonio, Texas, cancer specialist said during a seminar in Oklahoma City in the 1980s.

But physicians refused to acknowledge the cure, said Col. Hansa Raval, M.D., a pathologist with the United States Army. Dr. Raval said her work in cytotechnology _ a diagnostic branch of medicine designed to pinpoint early stages of cancer _ was fruitless until she began researching the use of non-conventional methods of treatment.

The specialist said she witnessed the use of Raja yoga and meditation cure crippling arthritis, headaches and even cancer. And even though Raval offers proof, which she said was collected during two years of study at the Brahma Kumaris World Spiritual University in India, she has been dismissed by other members of the medical profession as a kook. Yoga's success as a treatment method is due to another hypothesis Raval proposes that 98 percent of all cancer is psychosomatic.

This is not chanting or mantra reciting, the physician said. It's not based on scriptures. It's not a cult. It's not biofeedback. It's deeper than that. This is a full-proof method of meditation, a detailed understanding of what the soul is. Raval maintains that medical schools belittle the study of non-conventional methods of cancer treatment in favor of conventional methods such as radiation, chemotherapy, and treatment through machines.'

Medical schools teach students that the human being is only a body. But the mind has the power to cure the body. By definition, psychosomatic means a combination of mind, or soul and body.

The soul creates the disease, but the body suffers. If the psyche creates the disease, the only way to cure it is through the psyche. It's a very simple formula: treating the seed of the problem.

Further, studies in parapsychology all point to the treatment of illness through treatment of the soul. The World Spiritual University, which has branches in 30 countries, teaches peace and perfection for health and happiness through the use of Raja yoga. The university gained status as a non-governmental member of the United Nations and has offices at the U.N. building in New York.

Raja yoga teaches students to search their soul world for answers on where they came from and why the cancer entered their body. They learn what role religion, stress, family and lifestyle played in the cancer.

Yoga for Stress Relief (With The Dalai Lama)

Yoga instructor Barbara Benagh has practiced and taught yoga for nearly 35 years. She discovered yoga while living in England and began teaching there. She moved to Boston and opened The Yoga Studio on Beacon Hill in 1980.

In addition to her local classes Barbara teaches yoga seminars throughout the US and internationally. She is a regular contributor of articles to Yoga Journal magazine. She has several audio CDs of live classes available as well as DVDs, the latest being Yoga for Beginners released by Body + Soul magazine, and Yoga for Stress Relief that includes a discussion on meditation from the Dalai Lama.

Barbara was kind enough to answer some questions from Amazon.com about this unique line of yoga DVDs.

How are these DVDs different from other yoga DVDs?

I was drawn to working with Bodywisdommedia because they produce DVDs they are interactive. Rather than a "one size fits all" single routine that is typical of most products, these DVDs offer choice, allowing the user to customize and change their yoga practice to suit their needs. No two persons are the same so the ability to change your practice - easing shoulder tension one day and an invigorating morning wake up the next - come as close as possible to allowing you to address your individual needs at home. Not only do people have different physical needs, but they have different time constraints as well. If you have only 20 minutes, there is a practice for you but there are longer practices as well (some as long as 90 minutes) that address the total body/mind connection. The sheer number of yoga sequences offered on each of these DVDs is a first. They are incredibly comprehensive.

How were you able to get the Dalai Lama involved?

This project dovetailed perfectly with the Dalai Lama's message that modern stress is one of the greatest obstacles to our mental happiness and physical wellbeing. Because we are long-time sincere practitioners, having a 30-minute lecture of the Dalai Lama teaching how to meditate on the Yoga for Stress Relief DVD was a perfect fit. Bodywisdommedia also has a broader relationship with the Office of Tibet and are releasing historic lectures with "A Path to Happiness" being the first one.

How will potential buyers of these DVDs know which one is right for them?

The titles are very indicative of what appears on the DVD and therefore a good guide. I really enjoyed making Yoga for Stress Relief because it is incredibly relevant. We strove to make the sequences accessible to as many people as possible, whether they are a beginner or long time practitioner. Yoga for Beginners is a great, non-threatening place to get started and includes lots of sound technique developed over my 30 years as a yoga teacher. Power Yoga for Every Body is a bit more challenging taking you from the beginning level and gradually progressing to much more demanding routines.

Ali MacGraw - Yoga Mind & Body [VHS]

Ali MacGraw - Yoga Mind & Body [VHS]Clean white sand and a cool predawn sky are the backdrops for this stunningly produced video, complete with an upbeat New Age soundtrack. Don't be put off by the MTV-like camera work, as this video constitutes an excellent, well-balanced workout. Ali MacGraw and a supporting cast of something-for-everyone models work through this 50-minute routine, overseen by yoga master Erich Schiffman. The first minutes focus on ujjayi breathing, then MacGraw leads us through a complete practice of shoulder stretches, sun salutations, back bends and twists, and standing poses. No equipment is required, but a sticky mat is recommended. Unlike other videos targeted for beginners, Yoga Mind & Body does not offer modifications for difficult poses and so is best suited for practitioners with some previous experience. --Jhana Bach
